E-Cigarette Explosion Causes Damage To Oklahoma Home, E-Cig Lawsuit Filings Increase

June 05, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com provides commentary on the story of another e-cigarette explosion that occurred in Oklahoma. NewsOn6.com reports more in depth on the recent e-cig explosion and notes that a local Tulsa man was charging his e-cigarette in the USB port on his computer when the explosion occurred. The victim was in the other room doing dishes, and luckily out of the corner of his eye he noticed a stream of light coming from the other room. That stream of light happened to be a fire which had set his shades, furniture and computer ablaze.

The victim claims that he often utilizes his computer to charge his e-cigarette, and luckily he was not in the room when the device exploded. FEMA has concluded the cause of most of these incidents is the lithium-ion battery that powers many e-cigs. They have also indicated that 80 percent of explosions resulting from e-cigarettes occur when the device is charging. This happens when the voltage is too high causing an overload of pressure within the device, which in turn causes the release of energy seen as an explosion.

Thankfully for the Tulsa native, he was able to call the fire department to subdue the flames before the fire destroyed his entire house. However, there have been a number of other e-cigarette explosions since the devices have been made publically available. E-cigarette explosions have occurred across the U.S., in states such as California, Texas, Idaho and New York as well as in the United Kingdom. In one case, a woman from California was driving to the airport while charging her device, when suddenly the device exploded in the car. She was awarded a 1.9 million dollar settlement after filing suit.
