Father Dies Of Uncontrollable Bleeding, Daughter Files Lawsuit Against Xarelto

June 06, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on Xarelto, a blood thinner drug used to treat atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that can at times put patients at a higher risk of blood clots or strokes. Many patients diagnosed with this heart issue take blood thinners or anticoagulants as a preventative measure. Blood-thinning drugs such as Xarelto have also been alleged to cause uncontrollable bleeding.

One issue with Xarelto is that at the time the drug was released, it had no known antidote to prevent possible uncontrollable bleeding. Most traditional blood thinner drugs such as Warfarin utilize an antidote of Vitamin K if excessive bleeding were to occur. Vitamin K acts as a clotting agent to counteract the effects of the blood thinner.

This issue is one of the main points alleged in a lawsuit filed under case number 2:14-cv-00159-CR in Vermont by a daughter on behalf of her father. The man died tragically from uncontrollable bleeding following an unexpected injury. Doctors diagnosed the resulting brain bleed as a parenchymal hemorrhage, a type of intracerebral hemorrhage. Doctors were only able to keep him alive for 6 days before he died. Even though her father had only taken the drug for a minimal time, she is stating in her paperwork that her father died as a result of taking Xarelto. The lawsuit has been filed against the makers of the drug, Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer AG, the former of which is a subsidiary company of corporate giant Johnson and Johnson.

Unfortunately, the Vermont plaintiff is not alone in filing a lawsuit related to uncontrollable bleeding allegedly caused by Xarelto. In Philadelphia, PA, 550 cases have been grouped together in a mass tort program. More than 2,800 federally-filed cases have been consolidated into a comprehensive litigation process called Multidistrict Litigation (MDL 2592).
