Texas Woman Files Lawsuit Against Xarelto

June 06, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on Xarelto, a blood-thinning drug manufactured by Bayer Healthcare and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which is a subsidiary company of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation. Xarelto was a very popular blood-thinning drug when it first came out on the market 5 years ago, but since then it has become ensnared in controversy, with more than 3,400 lawsuits being filed against Bayer and Janssen alleging the drug has caused uncontrollable and life-threatening internal bleeding. Some have claimed that Xarelto’s manufacturers did not adequately warn consumers and medical professionals about the possible dangers of the drug.

One such case has been filed by a Texas couple. The female plaintiff, in this case, suffered from atrial fibrillation, a medical condition adversely impacting the heart. Atrial fibrillation can potentially increase the risk of stroke in patients. Anticoagulant medications are prescribed as a proactive and preventative measure to avoid that risk. The plaintiff was also deemed to be susceptible to the occurrence of stroke. Xarelto was prescribed to the plaintiff to help prevent any chance of a stroke happening.

After only 5 months of taking Xarelto, the plaintiff claims that she suffered a life-threatening episode of spontaneous internal bleeding. She also claims that because of that bleeding, she now deals with long-term medical issues.

It should be noted that this particular lawsuit was filed by the Texas couple in a court in the Eastern District of New York. However, due to the consolidation of the multitude of cases by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) against Xarelto because of strikingly similar allegations about the drug, the case was transferred to Eastern Louisiana as part of the consolidated multidistrict litigation (MDL 2592).
