Call For Increased Worker Safety Standards, Commended By Construction Accident Lawyer

June 12, 2016 – – Thomas Moverman of LipsigLawyers.com provided commentary on the recent efforts for safety standard reforms for construction workers in New York. Moverman explained that with increased safety standards, employers can ensure that their employees are less at-risk to suffer work-related injuries. Attorney Moverman noted that with the adoption of additional safety procedures, rules, and regulations the number of work-related fatalities should decrease significantly.

William Gilbane III agrees with attorney Moverman, Gilbane is the head of Gilbane Building Co.’s New York office. As reported in a news report from The Real Deal, Gilbane Building Co. is in charge of the Hudson Yards Project as well as the expansion of New York Presbyterian Hospital on the Upper East Side. Gilbane has required his employees to utilize a safety harness at any time that they are 6 feet or above off of the ground. Gilbane urges federal regulators to adopt his rule, he notes that most serious injuries on construction sites occur from serious falls.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) concluded that 40 percent of all private construction workers deaths in 2014, occurred from falls. Therefore with that adoption of a safety harness use, federal regulators could significantly combat the risk of working as a construction worker in the United States of America. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also indicated that in the 545 cases of fatal falls, in 2014 in both private and public construction, where an individual fell to a lower level where height was known, nearly ⅔ of the falls happened at a height of 20 feet or less.

Lipsig, Shapey, Manus, & Moverman note that OSHA has made significant progress decreasing the worker death rate in America. However, they note that with further regulation as Gilbane proposes in The Real Deal’s report, the death rate could be minimized further. Attorney Thomas Moverman has represented hundreds of victims of construction accidents. He secured a previous client a compensation of $2,600,000 following a scaffolding defect resulting in several fractured ribs, and severe spinal injuries. The firm is offering free legal consultations to construction accident victims so that each individual is offered the extensive legal support that they deserve.
