Construction Accident Lawyer Demands Safety Reforms, Following OSHA Announcement

June 20, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman has responded to a recent statement made by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) following the death of a Connecticut construction contractor. Moverman indicated that OSHA is in need of more manpower as well as a more enhanced level of legal authority. Attorney Moverman stated that with the increase in the frequency of construction accidents, there is a greater demand for federal funding, as well as a necessity for extensive revisions to the current safety protocols and procedures.

As reported by TheHour.com, a spokesperson from OSHA claimed their ongoing investigation in Wilton, Connecticut could take months to complete. The investigation follows the unexpected death of a Danbury contractor who suffered fatal injuries due to electrocution on June 9th. The area director for OSHA Southwest Connecticut emphasized that the organization is currently in “fact-finding mode” and that some parts of the autopsy report, utilized to determine the cause of death, can take extended periods of time to be returned. One example of this is the “toxicology report which could take six to eight weeks” to be finalized and returned.

OSHA is a federally mandated agency, currently operating in all 50 states with the mission of ensuring the safety and health of over 130 million workers across the nation. OSHA is tasked with a nearly impossible task, although the organization has 10 regional offices, and 90 local-area offices, they are substantially understaffed. The organization has 2,200 inspectors, responsible for 130 million-plus workers working at 8 million different job sites. This ratio of inspectors to workers delegates the responsibility of over 59,000 workers to each inspector.

OSHA lists fatalities as a result of electrocutions as the second leading cause of death for construction workers in the United States. In 2014, 74 construction workers sustained fatal injuries after being electrocuted, making up over 8 % of all construction worker fatalities for the calendar year.
