IVC Filter Lawsuit Filed By South Dakota Woman After Filter Gets Embedded In Her Organs

June 20, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit filed by a South Dakota woman claiming that her Bard IVC filter is causing major health problems. The plaintiff filed her case (Case No. 4:2016cv04005) in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota in October 2012. The case alleges that after the woman had the device implanted, the filter embedded into her internal organs. In 2014, the plaintiff underwent surgery to have the device removed but it was unsuccessful. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff is expecting to face more issues from the Bard IVC filter in the future, including life-threatening complications and ongoing medical care.

The first IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) filter was introduced to the US market in the 1960s. The early devices were designed for permanent implantation, but recent years have seen a wave of “retrievable” filters approved by the FDA. These filters are designed for patients with a high risk for pulmonary embolism, but can be removed once the risk has diminished. Unfortunately, “retrieving” an IVC filter seems to be difficult. Between 2005 and 2010, the FDA stated that they received over 900 reports of adverse events associated with the devices.
