Construction Accident Lawyer Urges Safety Revisions Following St. Patrick’s Cathedral Mass

June 20, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman commented on an event from early May where construction workers honored the lives of their fallen co-workers. Moverman also noted that there regrettably will be more names honored in the near future, if federal regulators do not implement additional safety precautions to the current construction safety rules and regulations. Moverman sends his condolences to all 16 families of the victims that were fatally injured in 2014 in construction accidents in New York City.

The New York Times reports that a bell rang 17 times in St Patrick’s Cathedral on May 3rd, to honor all construction accident fatalities from NYC in 2014, along with a symbolic ring for all the previous victims. One reverend claimed that “there is understanding this is a sacred industry,” emphasizing that all those in construction “have sacred hands, and are greatly appreciated,” today, and every day. The article also reports that with the booming real estate industry of New York City, the number of injuries and fatalities has risen sharply as of late.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) indicates that there were over 4,800 fatalities due to work-related injuries in 2014. Nearly 900 construction workers fell victim to fatal injuries in 2014, which represented over 20 % of the total fatalities from the calendar year. On average 92 workers were killed each week, while on the job in all industries in 2014.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics concludes that nearly 60 % of construction worker fatalities were a result of construction’s ‘Fatal Four,” which are the four leading causes of death in the construction industry. The ‘Fatal Four’ includes death by fall, electrocution, being struck by an object or being caught in between an object or equipment. Which the BLS claim, if eliminated would save the lives of over 500 American construction workers’ lives per year.
