IVC Deep Vein Thrombosis: A Look At A Serious Side Effect Alleged In IVC Filter Lawsuit Filings

June 21, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a serious side effect that has been associated with the use of IVC filters. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is an ailment caused by a blood clot in a deep vein and can sometimes be life-threatening. Inferior vena cava thrombosis refers to the formation of a clot in the IVC, a blockage that limits the flow of deoxygenated blood on its journey back to the heart. Symptoms of DVT include swelling, pain and tenderness, often in the legs.

The cage-like devices were designed to catch blood clots before they reach the lungs. Medical research, however, has long associated the use of IVC filters with the risk of potentially life-threatening blood clots. In a study by radiologists from Massachusetts General Hospital, researchers found that even following implantation of the device, 3.7 percent of the 1,731 patients being monitored died of pulmonary embolism; in another 12, pulmonary embolism was identified during an autopsy, but considered unrelated to the cause of death.

Severe adverse events are what have prompted hundreds of patients to file lawsuits against manufacturers such as C.R. Bard and Cook Medical. Plaintiffs in the cases have claimed that in addition to the side effects they say were a direct result of the device, the companies were aware of the defective design and marketed them anyway. These cases have been combined in MDLs in Arizona and Indiana and are in the process of developing bellwether cases.
