In Wake of IVC Filter Lawsuit Filings FDA Encourages Adverse Event Reports

June 21, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the growing number of IVC filter related injuries and how to report adverse events. The devices, which are used to catch blood clots, have allegedly been associated with a number of injuries as reported by the FDA. The administration stated that between 2005 and 2010, it received 921 reports of adverse events related to the devices. As these cases grow in number the FDA has issued warnings and guidance on the use of these filters.

The initial communication put forth by the FDA about the filters cited the more than 900 events in its statement. The FDA also noted, “Some of these events led to adverse clinical outcomes in patients. These types of events may be related to a retrievable filter remaining in the body for long periods of time, beyond the time when the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) has subsided.” The communication was followed by recommendations that doctors remove filters as soon as possible after the risk of pulmonary embolism has decreased. The statement also encourages medical professionals and patients to submit adverse event reports should they experience any.

Patients and healthcare professionals can submit these reports through the FDA’s MedWatch portal. The reports can include prescription or over the counter medications, medical devices, biologics, combination products, special nutritional products, cosmetics and food and beverages. Alleged side effects of IVC filters have included perforation, embolizations, device migration and filter fracture. Lawsuits in regard to these issues have been filed in MDLs in places including Indiana and Arizona.
