Panama City FL Plumbing Company Warns Against Practice Of Flushing Wet Wipes

June 21, 2016 – – Mr. Rooter of Northwest Florida is warning people not to flush wet wipes as this could lead to serious problems with their plumbing. In various places in Panama City, FL, warning signs have started to appear urging people not to flush wet wipes, makeup wipes, and other types of wipes down their toilet. According to Mr. Rooter of Northwest Florida, which strives to be the best plumber Panama City, FL has to offer, they have had numerous call outs for so called ‘fatbergs’, which clog up sewage systems. This has led to some household properties being hit with repair bills as high as $16,000.

The fatberg cleaning bills are placing a significant drain on the overall economy as well. Around $15 million is spent per year to clean it up. As such, local governments are working together to raise awareness of this issue. Specifically, they want people to understand that the ‘flushable’ claim on some wipes is actually misleading.

Scott Hobbs from Mr. Rooter of Northwest Florida says: “We have tested so-called ‘flushable’ wipes and found that they don’t disintegrate even after being in an agitator for an hour. Toilet paper, by contrast, takes just a few minutes to disintegrate. This means that wipes pose a significant blockage threat.”

While misleading, the flushable claims are not entirely false. The wipes do meet certain industry standards. However, it has been observed that these standards are not appropriate. “The standards have been set for completely new, properly maintained sewage systems,” adds Hobbs. “Plus, they are set on the premise that people never flush more than two wipes at a time.”

Various plumbers in Panama City, FL are now coming together to state that wet wipes should not be endorsed as flushable. They have joined forces with community organizations and churches, asking the to put warning posters up to educate the public about the dangers of flushing wipes.

“We hope that our efforts will have a global impact because the problem exists not just in the US,” adds Hobbs. “We also want to urge manufacturers to no longer label their wipes as flushable. The reality is that around 70% of pump station blockages are caused by wet wipes, and someone has to foot the bill for that.”

The Panama City, FL plumbing company also added that wet wipes aren’t the only problem. Disposable nappies and female hygiene products should also not be flushed.
