Genesis Masonry (www.GenesisMasonry.ca), a leading masonry company in the GTA, is commenting on a new poll, which found that Canadians are spending more money on outdoor renovations.
A new poll from CIBC has surveyed Canadian homeowners on their renovation spending habits. The survey has found that more homeowners are planning on spending money on outdoor renovations, with 42% of respondents saying they will do an outdoor reno in 2016, compared to 25% in 2015. “Outdoor renovations are now one of the most popular types of renovation for Canadian homes,” says Brad Maher, Senior Sales Representative at Genesis Masonry. “Homeowners have started to see the benefits that outdoor renos can have for their day-to-day life, as well as for the value of their home. Kitchens and washrooms used to be more popular choices, but there’s been a big change in the past couple of years.”
According to the survey results, outdoor renovations are now the most common renovation choice after basic maintenance. As well, only around one-third of homeowners are planning on doing a bathroom renovation, while slightly more than a quarter are planning for a kitchen renovation, which account for declines of seven percent and six percent, respectively, from 2015.
“Outdoor renovations can have a much better bang for the buck, which may be why we’re seeing this increase” notes Maher. “The first thing people see of a house is the exterior, so improving that can add value to your home. It can increase its curb appeal and make a lot more attractive to buyers.”
The average price that homeowners are expecting to spend on their renovation is $13,000, according to the survey results. This is up slightly from the previous year, but over half of homeowners are also worried about overspending.
“Outdoor renovations are also often a lot more affordable than an entire interior remodel,” says Maher. “That’s another reason why we may be seeing this switch. For instance, a homeowner can put in a stone paved patio or driveway for a fraction of the cost of what it takes to redo an entire kitchen or bedroom. The renovation will also be less of a disruption to their day-to-day life.”
Some of the top areas that homeowners will focus on include outdoor decks, patios, and driveways. Maher advises homeowners considering a renovation to determine their budget and do proper planning before committing to any one job.
“A homeowner should focus on renovations suited for their property,” says Maher. “Having a patio is one way to extend the living space of one’s home, but that may work better for houses with ample outdoor space. Even simple jobs, like adding in stone steps, can really boost the look of a house.”
