Oklahoma Man’s Wounds Require Head Stitches From E-Cig Explosion, Stems Potential E-Cigarette Explosion Lawsuit
July 04, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the increasing controversy surrounding e-cigarettes and injuries sustained due to the devices exploding. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) now attributes the explosions of devices to overheating lithium-ion batteries. When internal pressure builds up inside the e-cigarette, it causes the energy to be projected out through the seal end of the battery which causes the explosion. While FEMA states that there have been at least 25 reported e-cigarette explosions, this number is probably much higher due to the underreporting.
The explosions can happen very quickly. FEMA has also stated that 80 percent of the explosions have occurred while the unit was charging, which would attribute to the overload of voltage. One explosion occurred in California in 2013 as a couple was charging their unit in the car. The lithium-ion battery exploded leaving the female passenger with second-degree burns. The victim filed a lawsuit alleging the lack of adequate safety measures and the failure to be notified of the dangers of the e-cig. She was awarded $1.9 million in damages in October 2015.
Another instance occurred in Oklahoma where a 22-year old man suffered serious injuries when his e-cig exploded in his face. The victim stated that he was refilling the juice when there was a sudden flash. He states the then heard a loud bang and was hit in the head by a piece of metal. Thankfully his sleeping parents were awakened by the sound of the explosion and were able to take their son to the emergency room. He required 8 stitches as a result of the explosion.
