North Carolina Workers Narrowly Avoid Tragic Fate, Induces Comments By Construction Accident Lawyer

July 04, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman referenced a recent development in Durham, North Carolina to emphasize the dire need for construction safety reform after 6 workers narrowly escaped death on June 23rd. Moverman indicated how fortunate the local Durham workers were, explaining that small slabs of concrete or falling scaffolding have left many other construction workers fatally wounded previously. Attorney Moverman noted that if additional safety rules and regulations are not implemented for construction workers, they will continue to be among the most at-risk employees nationwide.

According to a local report from ABC 11, chunks of concrete plummeted nearly 6 stories to the ground floor, after a crane operator was assisting in lifting the concrete panel. Thankfully, the 6 workers on the ground floor, were uninjured in the accident that occurred at 504 East Pettigrew Street. Local authorities indicated that they plan on investigating the incident, and have contacted OSHA (The Occupational Safety & Health Administration) for their assistance.

OSHA is a federally mandated agency, tasked with the immense responsibility of regulating workplace safety for nearly 130 million American workers in over 8 million locations nationwide. Each OSHA inspector is currently accountable for the safety and well-being of nearly 59,000 workers each, which is a daunting task for any inspector. Federal OSHA currently has 10 regional offices across the country, along with assistance from nearly 90 local OSHA branches.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicated that in 2014, there were nearly 3 million non-fatal injuries and illnesses in all private industry. The BLS concluded that nearly ⅓ of those injured or ill, due to work conditions, missed at least 1 day of work. The BLS also claimed that there were nearly 5,000 fatal work injuries across all industries in 2014, which was the highest number of fatal work injuries for a given year, since 2008.
