E-Cigarette Explosion Lawsuit Plaintiff Awarded $1.9 Million For Damages Sustained In E-Cig Explosion
July 05, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit which resulted from an exploding e-cigarette. In 2013 a couple was on their way to the airport with the e-cig charging in the car. When the unit exploded the driver of the vehicle suffered second-degree burns on the lower part of her body as well as her hands. She filed a lawsuit claiming that necessary safety measures were lacking and she was not given information regarding the dangers associated with the device. The plaintiff was awarded $1.9 million in damages.
There was another explosion reported by KFOR.com, in which an individual was injured by an exploding e-cig. This incident involved a 22-year old Oklahoma man who was filling his e-cig with juice when he heard a bang and felt a piece of errant metal hit his head. His parents were awoken when they heard the noise from the alleged explosion and quickly took their son to the emergency room. He was given 8 stitches on his head as a result of the metal from the e-cig hitting him.
Both of these explosions happened very quickly and without warning. Despite the spontaneous nature of the explosions, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has concluded that the explosions are the result of the lithium-ion batteries overheating creating instability in the canister due to increasing pressure. Because of the pressure, the energy that builds up is projected through the seal at the battery end of the device, thus causing the explosion. FEMA has also stated that most of the explosions occur while the e-cig unit is charging primarily because of an overload in voltage.
FEMA has also provided information related to the number of reported explosions. The agency states that there have been at least 25 documented cases of the devices exploding but many feel this number is low since many incidents may not have been reported.
