Personal Injury Lawyer Releases Statement Regarding Workplace Safety Following Fatal West Virginia Ditch Accident

July 26, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com summarizes a local news story by the Marietta Times about the death of a West Virginia worker in Preston County while working on the installation of a water treatment system. The victim was a 38-year old from Strange Creek located in northern West Virginia. He died from injuries sustained during a ditch cave-in at a worksite that was part of a bond reclamation project commissioned by the DEP’s Office of Special Reclamation at the former Decondor Coal site.

Attorney Thomas Moverman of Lipsig, Shapey, Manus, & Moverman extended his condolences to the family of the man that lost his life on the job. He is hopeful that this accident will highlight the need for strengthened rules and regulations for the construction industry in the United States. He also stated that the number of construction accidents has greatly increased with no real sign of abating.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency tasked with the oversight of the health and safety of over 130 million workers in the United States. Despite the importance of the agency’s mission, it is, unfortunately, significantly understaffed with only 2,200 inspectors. Each inspector is responsible for ensuring the safety of 59,000 workers.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has indicated in a report that in 2014 alone, 4,281 workers were killed while working on the job. Of this number of fatalities, 899 workers were in the construction industry which translates into over 20 percent of the total number of work-related deaths that occurred in 2014.

Lipsig, Shapey, Manus & Moverman have been representing victims of construction accidents for years. In one case, Attorney Thomas Moverman won a victim $2.6 million for a worker who injured his knee and back in a fall from defective scaffolding. The firm has successfully obtained millions in settlements for those victims and strongly believes in fighting for the compensation victims need and deserve. Lipsig, Shapey, Manus & Moverman is currently looking to assist those individuals who have been injured in a construction accident and qualifying individuals may be entitled to financial compensation.
