Personal Injury Lawyer Presses On For Safety Reform, As Disaster Is Narrowly Averted In Midtown Construction Site Fire
August 01, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on an incident at a Midtown NY construction site. As per a story from DNAinfo.com, a fire broke out at a construction site located at 390 Madison Avenue and 47th Street. The cause was determined to be a basement transformer catching fire. During the blaze, 4 construction workers were injured and sent to local medical facilities to be treated and, thankfully, only suffered minor injuries. The workers were employees of Tishman Construction and were rebuilding an office tower.
Attorney Thomas Moverman of Lipsig, Shapey, Manus & Moverman commended firefighters for their quick response and action that prevented the fire from becoming much more serious than it was. He also commented on the need for revisions to current safety rules and regulations so that accidents such as these are far less frequent. Moverman stated that it is all too common for construction workers to become injured or even die on the job due to unnecessary dangers they regularly face.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal regulatory agency that is responsible for the oversight of nearly 130 million workers. With only 2,200 safety inspectors, it is greatly understaffed. The agency is responsible for 8 million work sites throughout the country and each inspector must monitor the health and safety of over 59,000 workers, which is a daunting task.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has stated that there were almost 3 million non-fatal injuries and illnesses suffered by employees in 2014 in which a third of the victims were out of work 1 day. Yet, the average time missed from work after experiencing a non-fatal injury or illness is 9 days. In many cases, victims are not lucky enough to walk away from an incident and required hospitalization or tragically suffered fatal injuries.
