High-Intensity Interval Training Among Top Fitness Trends in 2016
According to a survey done by the ACSM, high-intensity interval training and group personal training are among the top trends in fitness today. Bootcamp gyms incorporate each of these fitness trends in addition to professionally educated personal trainers, also among the top fitness trends.

While traditional fitness centers and 24-hour gyms are in no real danger of extinction, fitness enthusiasts today prefer a more structured and intense workout. According to a worldwide survey performed by the American College of Sports Medicine earlier this year, fitness is evolving and the top fitness trends of 2016 do not include traditional or 24-hour gyms.
The number one trend in fitness in 2016 is wearable technology such as smart watches, fitness trackers and heart-rate monitors. The difficulty with wearable tech is the lack of motivation. Despite a projected $6 billion in sales by the end of 2016, many fitness enthusiasts have expressed losing interest in the gadgets quickly.
“I used my Fitbit for about three months,” said fitness enthusiast Kacie Vinton of Minneapolis, MN. “But I got frustrated when I didn’t hit my goals. Instead of feeling like a slacker every time I looked at it, I stopped wearing it. It didn’t help me work harder at all.”
Much like exercise fads of the past, wearable technology is only as motivational as the wearer will allow. As many fitness enthusiasts admit, the novelty wears off and the need for additional motivation arises.
“People can’t be driven by technology for long,” commented Manning Sumner, pro athlete trainer and founder of Miami’s top bootcamp gym, Legacy Fit. “Motivation and dedication can’t be controlled by a smart watch or fitness tracker counting your steps. It’s a helpful tool but, in general, it’s not going to change how you live your life.”
The next fitness trends topping the ACSM survey are each a part of today’s most popular fitness centers and bootcamp gyms: body weight training, high-intensity interval training, strength training and professional personal trainers, both private and group.
“Bootcamp fitness is highly effective,” continued Sumner. “It is high-intensity interval training at its best. Our program at Legacy Fit is very successful and we’ve found that by creating partnerships within the members, what we call ‘partner interval training’ or ‘P.I.T.’, the workout becomes even more efficient.”
As described by Sumner, Partner Interval Training takes high-intensity interval training to a new level. By producing a bond between partners, the results are increased motivation and stronger commitment to reach not only personal fitness goals but those of the workout partner. Gym members become vested in results and are far more committed to achieving those goals, not to mention the commitment to one another personally.
“We as human beings are competitive by nature,” explained Sumner. “By pairing up members, not only do they help motivate one another though the entire workout, but we see partners trying to outdo each other all the time. It’s created friendly competition and a family feel at Legacy Fit.”
Also listed in the top fitness trends in 2016 is exercise and weight loss. This is the incorporation of a dietary and nutrition program paired with a sensible exercise regimen. It has been the belief for decades that exercise is the most effective way to lose weight and while that is true to a point, according to many personal trainers and physicians, the only way to lose weight efficiently and keep it off is to revise one’s diet in addition to exercise.
“I joined the gym at a size 12,” stated Jennifer Brown, personal trainer. “I was working really hard at the gym and seeing some results but the real transformation my body made came after I adjusted how and what I ate. Now, I’m a size 2 and have become a certified personal trainer at the Legacy Fit in Summerville (SC) to help others who want to change their lives for the healthier.”
There are fads and there are trends. Physical fitness is neither according to Manning Sumner. “Physical fitness is a way of life, not a trend,” the entrepreneur stated. “You don’t stop exercising because it’s gone out of style like parachute pants or disco. You keep going because feeling good and being healthy never goes out of style.”
