For IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Today, SHARE Cancer Support is partnering with social network HealthUnlocked to launch three new online communities, which will provide valuable support and information to people with breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and metastatic breast cancer and their caregivers. They can be accessed at www.healthunlocked.com/share1 for breast cancer, www.healthunlocked.com/share2 for ovarian cancer, and www.healthunlocked.com/share3 for metastatic breast cancer. These communities are an online expansion of SHARE’s peer-led support model, which has been serving women with breast and ovarian cancer for 40 years.
Many cancer patients and survivors are increasingly turning to the internet and online social groups for health information and support. In the United States alone, there are 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer (including 155,000 women living with metastatic breast cancer) and approximately 195,000 women with ovarian cancer. SHARE’s new communities on HealthUnlocked will allow these women to share their experiences with a private, anonymous network of their peers from across the globe, as well gain virtual access to the expertise and understanding of SHARE’s trained peer supporters, who will be participating in the communities themselves.
“Providing online communities is a natural extension of SHARE’s mission to support women with breast and ovarian cancer. We’re excited to be able to reach more people than ever before,” said Jacqueline Reinhard, SHARE’s Executive Director.
HealthUnlocked is the largest social network dedicated to health in the world, with 4 million visitors per month. Visitors who join a SHARE community on HealthUnlocked get access to a simple, private social interface where they can ask questions about their conditions and treatment, discuss information and research, and give and receive encouragement. HealthUnlocked’s algorithm also offers community members suggestions for content relevant to their cancer journeys, connects members who are geographically nearby, and highlights research activities, such as clinical trials, that may be of interest. The service is anonymous and totally free of charge.
“Support and information are one of the largest factors in people managing their own health. Our communities provide vital support, allowing people who are experiencing similar health issues to ask questions and receive information. This new community has the opportunity to transform and dramatically improve the lives of many people,” said HealthUnlocked’s Chief Medical Officer, Matt Jameson Evans.
SHARE is a 40-year-old survivor-led organization that provides support, information, and resources to women affected by breast and ovarian cancers. Its mission is to help women and their families address the emotional and practical issues that arise from a cancer diagnosis and to provide the support these women need to feel less isolated, better informed, and more empowered as health care consumers. More than 55,000 times each year, SHARE programs touch women and men affected by breast or ovarian cancer, as well as members of the general public.
SHARE’s services include a national helpline staffed by survivors of breast and ovarian cancer who are specially trained to offer information and support, as well as educational webinars, programs, and outreach initiatives that educate the public about breast and ovarian cancer risks, symptoms, treatment, and research. Support groups, led by peer-facilitators, are also available in the New York City area. All of SHARE’s services can be accessed through www.sharecancersupport.org, and the helpline, 844.ASK.SHARE (844.275.7427).
