As Talcum Powder Lawsuit Filings Grow In Number, Use Of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy In Ovarian Cancer Treatment Increases

October 31, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent article by MedicalXpress concerning the use of certain chemotherapies in treating ovarian cancer.

According to the article, researchers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston examined the use of NACT versus primary cytoreductive surgery (PCS) in a multi-center observational study.

“The researchers found that from 2003-2010 to 2011-2012 there was an increase in NACT use from 16 to 34 percent in stage IIIC disease and from 41 to 62 percent in stage IV disease. There was variation by institution in adoption of NACT, from 8 to 30 percent for stage IIIC disease and from 27 to 61 percent for stage IV disease,” the article said.

Studies on ovarian cancer have been highlighted in the news recently, given the thousands of lawsuits that have now been filed against companies such as Johnson & Johnson for their alleged knowledge of their products’ connection to ovarian cancer.

Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder became incredibly popular after 1892 when the director of scientific affairs Dr. Frederick B. Kilmer first invented a scented powder that was originally labeled “for toilet and nursery,” according to the Huffington Post. Many women then started using it to sprinkle it in their underwear and genital area for freshening purposes.

Thousands of women in the U.S. have now made similar claims alleging that Johnson & Johnson hid valuable medical information that prevented consumers from knowing the dangers of using the powders. Those plaintiffs further claim that the use of Johnson & Johnson’s powders as a feminine hygiene product are directly linked to ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has denied claims that their products cause cancer and has stated that no causal link exists.
