Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

November 15, 2016 – – Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy Foundation is a non-profit charity organization striving to educate the public about psychopathy and provide assistance to people who have become victims of psychopathic individuals. This month marks the 10-year anniversary of its founding.

Dr. David Kosson, President of Aftermath, started the foundation in 2006, because people were contacting him and asking him for help. Although there were many organizations for victims of abuse, it became apparent that there were no organizations providing the specific kinds of help that victims of psychopathy needed. Several websites talked about psychopathy but made claims that were not consistent with scientific evidence.

“I wanted to provide a place where people could find accurate information about psychopathy,” Kosson explained. Turning words into actions, Kosson invited a small group of victims and researchers to work with him to create a foundation dedicated to support those who have been victimized by a psychopath.

“The early days were filled with long conversations and big plans and dreams,” recalls Dr. Paul Babiak, Vice President of Aftermath. “We needed to develop and build a comprehensive website with resources, educational material, and a forum for survivors to share their experiences and learn from them and the wisdom of others.”

With the help of many volunteers and supporters, the Aftermath Foundation built a website which provides accurate information about the nature and impact of psychopathy. Moreover, the Foundation developed workshops designed to educate therapists, mental health, and legal professionals about psychopathy and refers victims to these trained professionals.

“We still have a lot of work ahead of us,” Kosson said. “People with psychopathic traits hurt many, many people – the families in which they grow up, their friends, their romantic partners, their co-workers, and, sometimes, the people they meet on the street. Once you get a sense for the scope of the harm, you begin to feel it is important to do something about it.”

Over the next month, the Aftermath Foundation celebrates its 10-Year Anniversary with a series of videos which will focus on the Foundation’s accomplishments over the last decade, debunking popular myths of psychopathy, and providing tips on how to protect oneself more effectively from people with psychopathic traits.

The first installment of the series is available here.
