Docs Done For You, a professional company that handles document preparation related requirements, discusses how new reforms in college financial aid will benefit students.

Carlsbad, United States – November 16, 2016 /PressCable/ —

Choosing a college and applying for financial aid in the United States remain to be difficult and complicated, with many intelligent, low-income students not being able to go to college at all. However, with the recent reforms in college financial aid, more students are expected to successfully get the aid they need. Docs Done For You, a company that specializes in handling document preparation related requirements, discusses how these recent reforms will benefit students.

The new reforms in college financial aid allow students to find out whether or not they qualify for federal aid much sooner. Up until recently, students could not submit their FAFSA until January 1, leaving only a brief period between when it could be filed and the deadline for filing applications. Now, students can file the FAFSA as early as October 1.

“These recent changes will be extremely beneficial to students from all over the United States,” says a company spokesperson from Docs Done For You. “Allowing students to submit their FAFSA at least three months sooner will give them more time to meet both state and college aid deadlines.”

According to the company, earlier filing will also provide students a jump start on their college search. Since students learn about their federal aid eligibility right after filing, they can immediately use the information they gain to compare the affordability of colleges. For example, many low-income students will learn after filing in October that their Pell Grant will completely cover tuition costs at the local community college.

Furthermore, the longer time frame allows students more time to acquire and compare information about colleges. Since students can only learn how much a college will cost after filing their FAFSA, before the recent change was implemented they only had very little time to choose the right college. Thanks to the new schedule, colleges can now make aid offers several months earlier, giving students enough time to weigh their options carefully.

The documents specialist company has also stated that millions of more families will have access to a shortcut when filling out the application, which contains numerous questions about finances and taxes that may end up in the incorrect transcription of income information. This shortcut, called the I.R.S. Data Retrieval Tool, allows the instant transfer of tax information from the I.R.S. into the FAFSA. Before the new changes, the tool could only be used by families whose tax returns were already filed and processed by the I.R.S. Since the FAFSA is due before taxes are filed, only a quarter of families could use the tool. Now, the FAFSA only asks for income details from the previous year’s tax forms. Financial aid eligibility for the school year 2007-18 will be calculated using information from tax forms filed earlier this year, which cover the 2015 tax year.
