Impending Updates to Google Chrome Web Browser Could Leave Small Businesses at Risk
A New Article by One Stop Site Shop Details In-Depth and Helpful Information about Google’s Recent Changes to its Chrome Browser that will Label Certain Websites as ‘Not Secure’
LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / February 28, 2016 / The founders of One Stop Site Shop, a company that offers budget-friendly website design, management and other related services, have released a new article designed to help small business owners navigate a recent change by Google. The article, titled “Is Your Website Marked Not Secure?” offers detailed information about Google’s newest changes to its Chrome browser that will label websites without SSL certificates as “Not-Secure.”

As a company spokesperson for One Stop Site Shop noted, small business owners who are either unaware or unprepared for the Google change may face trust issues with their users and customers. Because over 1 billion people worldwide use the Chrome browser, the update could potentially and unfairly damage the reputation of a large number of businesses that are unprepared for the change.
Google first proposed this idea in December, 2014, when they outlined their desire to have standard sites marked as not-secure. After the introduction of new SSL providers and choices for security this announcement gained some steam, which eventually led to Google announcing in September, 2016 that the Chrome browser would soon start displaying this warning on certain sites.
“To help users browse the web safely, Chrome indicates connection security with an icon in the address bar. Historically, Chrome has not explicitly labelled HTTP connections as non-secure,” the new article noted, adding that starting in January, 2017, Chrome began to mark HTTP pages that collect passwords or credit cards as not-secure, as part of a long-term plan to mark all HTTP sites in this manner.
“Simply put, unless your website is served over SSL very soon, your website will be marked not-secure.”
Fortunately, the article noted, clients of One Stop Site Shop do not have to worry about the new Google change, as their SSL certificate is automatically included and configured for their website. Other small business owners should contact their web developer or hosting provider to inquire about installing the SSL certificate as soon as possible.
