Corpus Christi, Texas – March 1, 2017 /MarketersMedia/ —
Distracted driving continues to be a problem in America. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than eight people die every day in the United States as the result of a distracted driver and another 1.161 are injured. Many people feel they don’t engage in distracted driving, yet nothing is further from the truth, as anything that takes the driver’s attention away from the road falls into this category. This includes manual, visual and cognitive distractions, such as using a navigation system, changing the radio station or daydreaming while behind the wheel. Individuals who have been injured by a distracted driver or lost a loved one as a result of a crash of this type need legal representation.
“As technology advances, people often assume they no longer need to be as cautious when out on the road. There is now a system to prevent collisions, one to let the driver know if they are dozing off behind the wheel, another that alerts a driver when they depart from their lane and more. While these systems do help to reduce car accidents, the driver still needs to be paying attention to the road and what is going on around them. Sadly, many aren’t,” Alex Hernandez, trial attorney, states.
Distraction.gov reports that ten percent of drivers between the age of 15 and 19 who were involved in a fatal crash were distracted when the accident occurred. Teen drivers weren’t the only ones distracted, however. Drivers who are in their twenties are involved in almost a quarter of all fatal car accidents, yet account for 27 percent of distracted drivers. Furthermore, they account for 38 percent of the drivers who were making use of their cell phone at the time of the fatal crash.
“Cars move rapidly. In fact, it only takes a vehicle traveling at 55 miles per hour five seconds to travel 100 yards or the length of a football field. Now imagine doing so while blindfolded. This is precisely what a person is doing when they are texting behind the wheel, yet many people feel they can engage in this activity safely while driving. Nothing is further from the truth,” Hernandez continues.
In some cases, the driver may be using a company vehicle when the accident occurs. This plays a role in how the accident will be handled in a court of law, as the employer may bear some responsibility for the actions of his or her employee. This is only one of many reasons why an attorney is needed for any person injured in a car accident, especially one that involves a distracted driver.
