Risperdal Lawsuit Numbers Reach Staggering Highs
March 02, 2017 – – To date, there have been more than 18,000 Risperdal lawsuits filed in the United States. Experts say that this number is expected to continue to grow. The antipsychotic drug, produced by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, allegedly causes breast growth in young boys. Parents of patients affected have continued to file Risperdal lawsuit after lawsuit in an effort to gain compensation for additional medical costs incurred after taking the drug.
“Many parents simply want to ensure that this does not happen to another child,” says a spokesperson for Drug-Lawsuits.org, a website dedicated to providing consumers with information about this and other medical lawsuits stemming from medications. The website recently stated that they continue to receive information about new lawsuits in the case and say that they fully expect those numbers to continue to rise in the near future.
So far, the majority of the cases that have been filed in California, Missouri, and Pennsylvania, although reports of cases in additional states have also been noted. The Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas has already rendered a multi-million dollar verdict against Janssen Pharmaceuticals and its subsidiary Johnson & Johnson, the largest being a $70 million judgment, which was awarded in July 2016 to a child from Tennessee who developed gynecomastia or breast enlargement after taking the medication. The award was later increased to just over $76 million.
Janssen Pharmaceuticals has settled a number of Risperdal lawsuits to date and more continue to come in as reported by courts. It should be noted that in spite of the number of lawsuits that have been filed and those expected to be filed in the coming months, Johnson & Johnson recently stated that they do not expect these settlements to affect their bottom line significantly.
“People need to know that these pharmaceutical companies know the dangers of the drugs that they are handing out; they just don’t care,” says the spokesperson for Drug-Lawsuits.org. “These companies need to be held accountable for the trauma that they are creating.”
