Risperdal Lawsuits Are Reaching Record Highs

March 02, 2017 – – According to an annual report filed by Johnson & Johnson, Risperdal lawsuits have reached record highs. The pharmaceutical company, which is a subsidiary of Risperdal manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals, stated that more than 18,500 lawsuits have been filed as a direct result of taking the drug, which is marketed as an antipsychotic, primarily used by adolescents.

A spokesperson for Drug-Lawsuits.org, a website dedicated to offering information about the drug and resources for those seeking compensation says, “The number of lawsuits are staggering. It’s horrible that so many have been harmed by a medication that was marketed to help.”

Lawsuits stem from consumer allegations that the drug has caused breast growth in young boys who have taken it. The condition, known as gynecomastia, has been reported as severe in many cases. Johnson & Johnson reports that as high as the number of lawsuits is to date, they expect those numbers to climb even higher as courts prepare for litigation.

The majority of cases have been filed in Missouri, California, and Pennsylvania, although there are others filed in additional states throughout the nation. The mass tort that was centralized in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas has rendered multi-million dollar settlement verdicts against Janssen and Johnson & Johnson, the largest being reported as high as $76 million. Janssen Pharmaceuticals has settled many cases in the short time leading up to scheduled jury trials.

According to the annual report from Johnson & Johnson, they do not expect the settlements to significantly affect their bottom line. In fact, a spokesperson for the pharmaceutical giant recently reported that it “Has substantial defenses in these matters.”

Risperdal was first approved for sale by the FDA in 1993 for treating schizophrenia in adults. It was approved for use by children in 2006, and soon after reports began circulating about the side effects and their severity. Janssen agreed in 2013 to pay more than $1.3 billion in settlements of lawsuits alleging that the pharmaceutical company had been illegally marketing the drug for use in children, three years before it was approved to be used by minors.
