Summertime Is Peak Bed Bug Season.

Bed Bug Extermination Is a Necessary Need for Some Returning Travelers

Purcellville, United States – April 1, 2017 /MarketersMedia/

The most popular travel months of the year, June, July and August, coincide with an unfortunate recent discovery made by the National Pest Management Association and the University of Kentucky in their joint 2015 survey, Bugs Without Borders. The survey asked pest professionals about their experiences providing bed bug extermination in American homes. The results conclude that bed bug infestations continue to occur at high rates, with 99.6 percent of respondents having treated homes for bed bugs in the last year.

That statistic is staggering compared to 15 years ago, when only 25 percent of pest professionals had treated for bed bugs. A recent survey conducted in Santa Barbara, California, discovered that bed bug infestations appear to be on the rise. A local pest control company in the area reported that its revenue increased 31 percent in 2016.

Residential settings and hotels continue to be the most popular places for these pests to reside. Apartments and condos are the top places where professionals treat for bed bugs (95 percent), followed by single-family homes (93 percent) and hotels/motels (75 percent).

As American families make travel plans for the upcoming summer season, it’s important to remember that taking extra precautions and remaining vigilant is the key to preventing these pesky hitchhikers from traveling back home with you. It may sound extreme, but keeping luggage off the carpets and on a hard surface, such as a tabletop or in the bathroom if it’s spacious enough, is a good way to keep potential pests off of suitcases. Travelers should check the bedding as well. Look for dark, rust-colored spots at the ends of the bed under the top sheet and near the headboard. If signs of bed bugs are found, the hotel manager should be contacted, and the affected traveler should be moved to a different part of the hotel.

It’s suspected that summer is the most popular time of the year for bed bug extermination because travelers are unknowingly bringing the pests home with them. Heat treatment for bed bugs continues to be a favored way to exterminate them. The process takes just two to three hours, compared to the much more inconvenient freezing method, which can take three or four days.

If travelers do return home and find they have a need for bed bug extermination, a professional bed bug exterminator is the preferred method over DIY machine rental and removal. A professional has the proper training for extermination, and it’s less likely travelers will experience a reinfestation if a professional takes care of the initial problem.
