Xarelto Lawsuits Scheduled For Trial In April
April 03, 2017 – – The litigation surrounding the blood clot medication Xarelto will begin in just a few weeks. The Louisiana Federal Court is set to begin hearing the first bellwether trial in the nation involving Xarelto and the case is being watched very closely as the outcome could help to determine future rulings.
To date, pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson, parent company of Janssen Pharmaceutical, is facing more than 16,000 lawsuits involving Xarelto and more claims are being filed every day. The medication was manufactured by Bayer AG and marketed in the United States by Johnson & Johnson. The FDA initially approved the use of Xarelto in 2011 as a medication to help prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients who were facing knee or hip replacement surgery. Uses now also include prevention of stroke in those suffering from atrial fibrillation and treatment for the reduction of blood clots. The medication is also marketed to reduce the risk of stent thrombosis in those who have coronary artery disease. It was initially marketed to be a better medication than warfarin which is a blood thinner that had then been used for decades.
“Plaintiffs allege that the internal bleeding caused by Xarelto cannot be stopped,” says a representative for Xarelto-lawsuits.org, a site for those seeking information about filing a claim. “It was meant to replace warfarin which also caused internal bleeding. The difference is that the bleeding caused by warfarin has successfully been stopped in all cases. This is not true with Xarelto.”
In recent filings, the pharmaceutical company reported more than 16,000 lawsuits and pending claims in a number of states around the nation as well as class action complaints from patients in Canada. The lawsuits claim that the internal bleeding caused by the medication has serious life threatening consequences and some claims are being filed by the families of deceased patients who reportedly died from such internal bleeding.
“It’s just a sad case all the way around,” says the representative for the website. “Those who feel that they have been harmed by this medication should file their claim as soon as possible.”
