18,000 Risperdal Cases May End In A Huge Risperdal Settlement

April 03, 2017 – – It was revealed this year that pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has had over 100,000 lawsuits registered against it. Many of these cases involve Risperdal, which is alleged to have caused male patients to grow breast tissue. Risperdal is an antipsychotic medication, generally prescribed to young people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Many of the cases filed against J&J have ended in a settlement, but others remain at present. It is believed that, this year, the company will settle many of the cases, which may lead to several million dollar payouts.

The use of Risperdal has been associated with a range of side effects. These include blood clots, high blood sugar, weight gain, low blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease symptoms, and vision problems. Perhaps the most concerning side effect, however, is gynecomastia, which is the growth of breast tissue in male patients.

According to the Risperdal label, gynecomastia is a “less severe” side effect. The lawsuits claim that it is not “less severe” and they continue to pour in. July 2016 saw the largest Risperdal verdict to date, when the parents of a five year old boy were awarded $70 million, after their son developed breast tissue. This case was heard in Pennsylvania, where a jury decided that J&J did not properly advise the patient and his parents about the said potential side effect. This wasn’t the only settlement made in regards to Risperdal. In 2015, a man was awarded $2.5 million after he developed size 46DD breasts.

The drug is prescribed to people who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. It is not entirely clear how the drug works. However, scientists believe that it is a dopamine antagonist, and that this is how it benefits people with a mental illness.

More and more people are suggesting that J&J will soon admit liability in these cases, which would inevitably lead to a settlement. However, to date, the pharmaceutical company continues to say that the link between their product and gynecomastia does not exist. Some experts feel that if J&J were to start settling, it would set a precedent for the thousands of other cases that are still running.
