Philadelphia Truck Accident Lawyer Rand Spear On Danger Due To Unsecured Loads
Philadelphia, PA, USA, 05/22/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/
Objects falling off of personal trucks and trailers, as well as those coming off of commercial vehicles, can cause serious injuries and deaths. For any number of reasons if something is not properly stored or secured it can fall off a vehicle. This is especially dangerous as the weight of the object increases and as the speed of other vehicles on the road increases. Philadelphia truck accident lawyer Rand Spear says these situations can come out of the blue, when you least expect it.
Some examples of these situations include,
A pickup truck with a trailer hauling a backhoe was heading north on King of Prussia Road when the backhoe struck an Amtrak underpass in Radnor last month, tipping over and striking a car going the other way, reported the Radnor Patch. The driver of the car suffered only minor injuries.
A giant spool of wire fell off the back of a truck or trailer and rolled down a state highway in western Pennsylvania in January. The spool, about six feet in diameter and probably weighing thousands of pounds according to a witness, forced drivers to steer out of its way, reports KDKA. The witness, Dave Cole, shot this video of this rolling hazard caused by a truck driver who didn’t do his job correctly or equipment that failed to keep the spool in place.
The Florida Highway Patrol in January arrested a tractor trailer driver who’s accused of dropping 18,000 pounds of gravel onto a highway ramp in Tampa, causing three crashes and serious injuries to one driver, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Two cars behind the truck lost control on the gravel and hit a barrier wall. One of the drivers left his car to inspect the damage when he was struck by a third out of control car, throwing him over the wall, causing him to fall more than 30 feet to the ground below, resulting in serious injuries. The driver faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash and driving with an unsecured load resulting in serious injury.
Commercial truck drivers need to inspect their load before taking to the road to make sure everything on a trailer is secure. They need to be certain that every piece of their load is tied, strapped or covered to prevent it from flying off of the truck and causing a hazard to other drivers. If a company other than the driver’s employer negligently loaded a trailer, it too may face potential liability.
Those of us driving passenger vehicles and trucks also need to make sure anything in the bed of a truck, that’s transported on a trailer or is sticking out of an open trunk won’t come loose and threaten those following the vehicle. Although the heavier the object falling to the street the greater the potential harm, even lighter weight objects that motorists may try to steer around can cause accidents and injuries, especially to those on motorcycles. How many of us have seen the inevitable coming when drivers try to hold a mattress on their car roof as they drive.
