Dr. German Mendez, creator of the Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program, a non-profit reef restoration organization created to protect and restore the reefs around Cozumel Island in Mexico, announced an expansion of the program’s non-profit efforts by launching a reef restoration course to train volunteers for the Cozumel reef project. All funds will go towards protecting and restoring the reef.

The Cozumel Island is a popular tourist destination in Mexico. Immediately off its shores lies the second largest coral reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, a very diverse ecosystem home to a wide range of marine fauna and flora.
Threatened by the constant cruise ship traffic in the area, the Cozumel Reef has suffered various degrees of damage due to intense traffic, pollution and the water warming, being currently in need of protection and restoration.
The Cozumel Coral Reef Restoration Program (CCRRP) was created in 2013 by Dr. German Mendez and other biologists, in an effort to promote a healthier ecosystem and protect the fragile reef. The team behind CCRRP uses Lettuce Leaf coral called Agaricia agaricites, Acropora Cervicornis and Acropora Palmata (the Staghorn and the Elkhorn coral), as well as various other species, to develop the Cozumel Reef, minimize pollution damage and ensure future ecological sustainability.
Dr. German Mendez has recently announced plans to expand the program by training more volunteers to work on restoring the fragile reef. Candidates can enroll in the Coral Reef Restoration Course, a training program offering both theoretical notions and hands-on experience restoring various areas of the coral reef near Cozumel.
The enrollment fee is $160, and all the funds go towards future developments of the CCRRP. Dr. Mendez also started a fundraising campaign, inviting both individuals and organizations to contribute resources for the protection and restoration of the Cozumel Reef.
