Oak Ridge, TN Named the Safest City in America in 2017

Tennessee houses the safest city in America for 2017, while the most dangerous city is in Illinois.

Neighborhood Scout conducted a research on American cities with a population of 25,000 or more. The research was based on the total number of violent and property crimes per 1000 residents in each city. The crimes included murder, rape, aggravated assault, armed robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and larceny-theft. The population of each city and the number of crimes reported to the FBI were the main data said to be used in this research.

As a result of this research, Oak Ridge, TN was named the safest city in America for the year 2017, while Shoreview, MN, and Ridgefield, CT came in second and third place, respectively.

Oak Ridge is considered a medium-sized city with a population of 29,302 people. Its residents are very well educated compared to average communities in the country; as about 39.73 percent of its adults own bachelor’s degrees or even more advanced degrees.

On the other Hand, East St. Louis, IL received the title of America’s most dangerous city in 2017. East St. Louis is also a city of medium size, located in the state of Illinois where a population of 26,790 people resides.

In contrast with Oak Ridge, the vast majority of people living in East St. Louis has a very low level of education overall. Around 8.69 percent of people over 25 years old only hold a 4-year college degree or higher.

All the same, it is advised that citizens of the United States all consider getting home security systems, without regard to where they live. A study conducted at the University of North Carolina involved 422 convicted burglars and the factors that play into targeting a home. Findings read that 83 percent of burglars do actually check for alarm systems on the property before taking a further step. 60 percent of them also said they did not target homes with security systems in place. In the same study, 50 percent of the study subjects reported that they would bail on the attempt if an alarm were to go off, 31 percent reported that it would depend on the situation, and only 13 percent said they wouldn’t leave the property.
