For years, people have suffered from an irritating skin condition called keratosis pilaris (KP). Now though, there is a promising new lotion on the market which purports to reduce the severity of the condition. Aminah Sagoe, the CEO and Founder of Emmaus Beauty, a beauty company dedicated to boosting the quality of skin using natural ingredients, recently discovered a formula which, she claims, can alleviate symptoms. The treatment is a combination of traditional salicylic acid with glycolic acid, natural ingredients, and moisturizing oils.
Emmaus Beauty has been trying to solve symptoms of KP some time, but recently discovered that it was only when traditional acids were combined with natural ingredients that the treatment became more potent. The promising new outcomes can be explained by the presence of glycolic acid which has the smallest chemical structure among all AHAs (Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids). When combined with other ingredients, the formula provided the greatest penetration of the skin, delving deep into tissue to administer treatment. Sagoe claims she discovered the treatment after many years of suffering from KP herself. “I wanted a natural, yet effective solution for my KP solutions,” she says, rather than having to rely solely on harsh chemicals.
An established body of science already supports the use of salicylic acid in skin conditions. Salicylic acid, a type of BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) increases cellular turnover rates, leading to faster skin renewal and fewer clogged pores. Because of its ability to penetrate the skin, the acid is effective against a broad range of skin ailments, including whiteheads and blackheads.
This mode of action may explain why salicylic acid is used in the treatment of KP. The condition is characterized by groups of persistent, rough patches and small, acne-like bumps commonly found on the back of the arms.
Though the condition is genetic, many sufferers attempt to free themselves from symptoms using pharmaceutical chemicals, such as concentrated salicylic and lactic acids which soften the surrounding skin, returning it to a healthy state. Unfortunately, the results from conventional treatments are disappointing, with many sufferers noticing no change in the severity of their condition.
By combining salicylic acid with glycolic acid derived from fruit, Emmaus Beauty claims that the formula offers an effective treatment for KP sufferers, but there is concern that mixing both acids together may have adverse effects. The company says that these can be minimized if the lotion is used in reasonable quantities and recommends that it be applied to affected areas 2-3 times per week.
Today, there is a range of conventional treatments for KP. These include avoiding sudden changes in temperature, microdermabrasion, light peels and laser treatment. However, many of these approaches, in fact, fail to adequately relieve symptoms. Emmaus Beauty hopes that this lotion and its novel combination of ingredients will open up a new avenue of treatment for patients struggling with the condition.
