According to the Denver Business Journal, approximately 40 percent of the food that goes through the American food distribution system winds up in landfills rather than on people’s plates.

FoodMaven, a Colorado Springs, Colo., company, is trying to minimize this waste by purchasing food from producers and distributors that is headed toward landfills because of oversupply or imperfections that don’t affect taste or freshness. The company then sells it at discount prices to restaurants, school districts and health systems.

“We at 4Patriots are very much in favor of just about any program that reduces food waste,” said Allen Baler, Partner at 4Patriots, a Nashville, Tenn.-based company that provides a variety of products that help people become more self-reliant and independent.

“There are far too many hungry people in this country for us to be throwing away huge amounts of food. Getting people fed who need food should be job one. We also strongly suggest that Americans stockpile long-lasting survival food for an emergency, because one could be right around the corner.”

The 72-hour, one-week, four-week, three-month and one-year emergency food kits from Food4Patriots are good tasting and healthy, and have shelf lives of up to 25 years, so it’s not necessary to periodically rotate stockpiles.

The food in these kits can be prepared in less than 20 minutes and requires only boiling water. It’s contained in easy-to-store, space-age Mylar pouches – which keep out air, moisture and light – and tucked inside tough, stackable totes that are discreet and store anywhere – basement, attic, garage, shed, cabin or even an RV.

Baler’s company offers a half-dozen ways for Americans to cut back on the amount of food they waste:

• Make a specific list of items needed before going to the supermarket and stick to it. Don’t be a victim of impulse buys that often end up being tossed out.

• Eat dinner leftovers for lunch the next day, and maybe even for dinner the next evening if there is still food left over.

• Go through the panty and freezer to find food items that are nearing their expiration dates and put a meal together with them.

• Eat before going grocery shopping. A hungry shopper is more likely to buy food that he or she will end up throwing out.

• Make fewer trips to the supermarket. The more trips that are made, the more food will be purchased and possibly the more will be thrown out.

• If food that’s nearing an expiration date won’t be used, donate it to a non-profit food pantry.

Food4Patriots provides emergency food products that are shelf-stable for 25 years. Food4Patriots survival food kits are made with food grown, harvested and packaged in the United States, and all of the meals are made without any genetically-modified products, preservatives or fillers. The kits are available in 72-hour, one-week, four-week, three-month and one-year supplies.
