Recently, Northwest Trophy got to honor the individuals who work hard to maintain baseball fields by designing an award for the 2017 Groundskeeper Award Recipient. This year’s recipient was none other than the Cincinnati Brewer’s very own Gary Vanden Berg, who was an integral part of the Brewers organization for more than 30 years before passing away in 2011 due to cancer.
“This award is a true symbol of the work ethic and dedication that Gary and all other groundskeepers showcase out there on the field,” Gary Anderson said. “It takes a ton of expertise but even more so a ton of hard work.”
Groundskeeping is at times overlooked by the public. Fans of the sport don’t realize the effort it takes to manage the turf of the baseball field. What groundskeepers do is of high importance and keeps the players safe from injury due to poor field management. A job that the supplier of awards in Bellevue, WA, believes should not be taken for granted.
“Maintaining the field is just as important as playing the field, Gary Anderson said. “One cannot exist without the other so both should be recognized and valued in the sport of baseball.”
