As summer comes to an end, MTS Sussex, a popular motorcycle training school has issued advice to new riders as they face their first autumn and winter on two wheels.

Nikki Simithson-Birch, co-owner of MTS Sussex, said, “Although the advice is aimed at new motorcyclists, even the more experienced riders can benefit from a reminder of some basic safety suggestions. Most motorcyclists enjoy the experience of riding on dry summer days, but as the weather changes and days become shorter, it is particularly important that they take care of the fundamentals.”

The top five safety suggestions according to MTS Sussex are…

1: Make sure tyres are good condition / appropriate pressure – Very important there is plenty of tread to disburse water and grip the road. Tyre pressure is also important and will make a huge difference to the overall ride and economy!

2: Keep warm and dry – Wear waterproof clothing and layer up to stay warm, once you get cold you will lose concentration which becomes dangerous. MTS Sussex’s own A2/DAS bikes have heated grips on to keep hands and fingers warm; these are well worth considering on your own bike for the autumn & winter months. Make frequent stops to take on hot fluids/food to maintain the warmth.

3: Keep your distance – Remember on wet roads your stopping distance will increase, as well as vision being impaired so sit back and stay safe.

4: Clean your visor – You need to keep the visor clean, stop when it gets dirty from road grime or if your vision becomes distorted with rain or road salt and use either a visor cleaner or warm water to clean it.

5: Consider road conditions / debris from fallen trees etc – the roads narrow with debris being blown to the curb side, twigs and leaves in the road can be hazardous along with heavy rainfall. Also metalwork (drains/manholes) and white lines can be slippery in the wet.

MTS Sussex originally started training from a site in Haywards Heath, however having expanded they outgrew the premises and now complete their full licence training from a site in Burgess Hill along with three CBT sites (Crawley, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead). Although they are now based just a few minutes from the test centre, they still incorporate Haywards Heath in their training routes as it is a popular A2/DAS test route.

Haywards Heath routes include various scenarios that may occur in day to day riding. The town and outskirts of Haywards Heath are a short ride from the MTS Sussex full licence and CBT locations and can be reached via main roads as well as various more scenic roads, so training routes to and from Haywards Heath can vary each time.
