Florida Attorney Digs Deep to Help Victims of Hurricane Irma

Post hurricane Irma, charitable projects spearheaded by Orlando attorney Ryan Munns and other community leaders are being spotted all over the state of Florida

ORLANDO – As many Florida residents and businesses scramble to return to some sense of normalcy after hurricane Irma devastated entire communities across the state, some who were affected less severely have seized the opportunity to assist their fellow Floridians.

One such community leader is Ryan Munns, partner in Orlando law firm Bogin, Munns and Munns, and owner of a large Osceola County attraction called Wild Florida. Once federal, state, and local authorities announced it was safe to begin relief efforts, Munns galvanized forces from his family, employees, and hundreds of volunteers from his church community who wore bright yellow shirts which read, “Mormon Helping Hands.” The group amassed equipment and supplies from Munns’s businesses and headed directly to parts of the state which had little wherewithal to rebuild or where the infrastructure was completely overwhelmed and emergency response resources were stretched perilously thin.

The tiny town of Immokalee, whose population consists largely of humble farmers and migrant workers, was one of the first areas assisted by Munns and his army of willing workers. Starting early Saturday morning, the group accepted assignments to fall trees, removed debris from homes, move residents’ belongings out of flooded areas, and clean up yards. Once the assigned tasks were completed, small teams of volunteers began going house to house offering to help in any way they were needed.

Taking a short break Sunday morning under the pavilion in the community park in which the volunteers camped, participants observed the customary weekly religious ritual they call ‘partaking of the sacrament,’ and then returned to the task for which they had come.

“It has been a moving experience to serve the people of Immokalee. I feel we have been blessed to be able to answer the call to help.” said Carlos Palomino, one of the volunteer coordinators working shoulder to shoulder with Munns. Several additional projects were completed by the group in the ensuing weeks in Kissimmee, Naples, Marathon, and other Florida cities who are grateful for the ray of hope brought by the volunteers in the bright yellow shirts.
