Survivalist, disaster preparedness expert and author Michael Z Williamson tells people to “Be prepared, not scared,” comparing science fiction, as in a possible scenario from L. Ron Hubbard’s Battlefield Earth, to real life.

On the 4th of October, Williamson was a guest on CSC Talk Radio with Beth Ann. He spoke about being prepared for any tragedy such as: storms, earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes or even economic collapse.

In speaking of economic collapse, Williamson said, “With America, if there were an economic collapse, people should have 3 good skill sets. A professional skill set they use day to day, a useful trade you could fall back on, and then some kind of basic skill that is always necessary.”

He related to this concept of economics and skill sets when talking about reading science fiction novel Battlefield Earth where he said, “There are always basic steps you can take. I read the book [Battlefield Earth] when it first came out in ’82. It was an entertaining read. There’s good guys and bad guys. I consulted for a documentary on how an alien invasion would go. And of course there are limited ways you can invade a planet. In that book the aliens invaded in the past. And of course with the destruction of the infrastructure, everything collapsed. The economy collapsed and people ran for cover. Things like that caused massive destruction and death. There is no way around it. When we pick up in the story, it is a thousand years later and the Earth is being exploited for it’s resources. The hero by avoiding contaminated areas, by accident allowed him to be fitter than other people. He gets to the aliens and finds ways to exploit their weaknesses. He learns what he needs to learn and puts together a skill set and then implements it. And that’s how you respond to something like that.”
