About Suboxone®

Suboxone® is an FDA approved prescription medication that is used in the treatment of opiate addiction. Suboxone® comes in the form of a sublingual film (under the tongue) and includes two ingredients: buprenorphine and naloxone in a 4:1 ratio. Buprenorphine is a partial agonist which only has a limited opioid effect, and it competes with the full agonist opioids (such as morphine and heroin) for the opioid receptor. Buprenorphine has a very strong binding ability which displaces existing opioids and prevents other opioids from attaching to the opioid receptor. This is important because Suboxone® treatment can eliminate cravings and withdrawal symptoms, allowing patients to think and function normally. Please consult with a drug addiction treatment doctor to determine the right course of treatment for a patient.
