Augusta Dragic – Discusses the Rise in Popularity of Online Gaming for Women
BUCHAREST, ROMANIA / ACCESSWIRE / October 21, 2017 / The stereotypical image of an online gamer has long been that of a teenage boy or a single man in his 20s, huddled in a basement and rarely venturing out among people. In recent years, however, this preconceived notion has started to crack under a torrent of research evidence that paints a rather different picture. The massive popularity of smartphones and tablets, which have now become affordable for the majority of the population, has dramatically expanded the global gamer base. More importantly, what was once a male-dominated realm has been invaded by women, who now comprise more than half of game players, as recently noted by Augusta
Dragic, Director of HR at leading Romanian betting and gaming company Superbet.
The shift was observed as far back as 2010, with Forbes noting at the time that 30-something women could be considered the “new face of video gaming.” Moreover, women reportedly favored it as more than a leisure pursuit: they felt that console, online and PC games allowed them to become more comfortable with technology, facilitate their career advancement, and develop skills they could directly apply in a business environment. Phaedra Boinidiris, founder of WomenGamers.com, told Forbes that 38% of console gamers and 43% of PC gamers were women. In 2013, a study by Newzoo and the Casual Games Association confirmed the trend for growing female involvement in mobile gaming. The respective proportions in the United States and the European Union were 48% and 46%, while Korea, Japan, and China had collective female participation of 43%. As smartphone penetration continued to rise, so did the proportion of women in mobile gaming, Augusta
Dragic explains. A study published by the Internet Advertising
Bureau in 2014 claimed that 52% of gamers were female. A likely explanation is the finding that women spend more time online than men, mostly on their smartphones, according to a 2016 study by UKOM. A year earlier, Pew Research had found that 47% of smartphone owners used their devices for gaming.
While the stereotype of an online gamer has been consistently challenged in recent years, the fact remains that gender does affect preferences. The female base gravitates towards social media, strategy, and simulation games, as well as online casinos. According to a report from Quantic Foundry, women tend heavily towards mobile Match-3 and social farming games while giving sports and shooting games a wide berth. Whatever differences may persist, all of these findings clearly indicate the gaming industry must acknowledge the fact that female players now outnumber the male base, Augusta
Dragic notes. This will entail developers and publishers adopting a broader range of perspectives to create games for a more diversified audience.
Superbet, which began operating in 2009, is the top retail betting and gaming company in Romania, with an estate comprising 600 shops as of August 2017. It expanded its business with the launch of an online platform in 2016 to offer a wide range of opportunities in online betting, slots, live casino, virtual games, and lotteries. With more than 2,000 employees and the ambition to become the market leader in Central and South-East Europe, the company has been investing heavily in infrastructure, logistics, IT, human resources, and marketing programs.
