What does a university president do in his retirement? He writes fiction about what he knows best—running a university while dealing with the mafia.
Les Cochran is launching the Second Edition of his book, “SAX CLUB: Detroit Thorn Birds Defy Mafia.” It’s available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble and is expected to become a big hit with fans of the historical crime fiction world.
Living in Detroit during the 1967 riots, the would be author not only witnessed the demise of the city, but came into contact with mafia associates. Tight-roping between good and bad, he learned more than how to talk the talk; he walked the talk on the streets of Detroit.
And if that wasn’t enough, while serving as President of Youngstown State University (Ohio), he walked the narrow line between mafia leaders and university board members. Walking the talk and talking the walk, he not only created an alliance beneficial to both sides, but at the same time, rekindled life in the university for students and the community alike.

This is the fourth novel Cochran has authored. He selected the title Sax Club because it was actually a strip club he and friends visited in the 1970s. The aim of Sax Club is to provide insight for readers on the under-workings of the mafia as they took over the city of Detroit while the citizens fought to regain control. There’s also particular excitement about this launch because it is the first book in the new series about the Detroit Thorn Birds vs Detroit Mafia.
The book’s main focus is on how a special task force bypasses the corrupt police force and out-wits the mafia from the top down while the thorn birds defy the mafia from the bottom up. Detective Clark Phillips and his personal friends become the first of many Detroit thorn birds.
Readers will be particularly pleased by the role Father Dom Repice plays as he interacts with the Thorn Birds of Detroit.
The book’s cover art was created by Les Cochran and his wife Lin. Graphic artist Al Margolis fine-tuned the design. The Second Edition of “SAX CLUB; Detroit Thorn Birds Defy Mafia” is being released by Bookstand Publishing, Inc.
Les Cochran’s career and life experiences inspired the creation of this new series. He is working on additional books. The next to be titled BLIND PIG (March 2018 release date) and the third, GET EVEN, is in the works. Who knows how many more will be in the series?
The author’s positive outlook is a testament to his optimism, considering some of the missteps that occurred during its creation. At one point, due to the feedback of some readers and book critics, the second edition was published. Why? It needed to be “de-sexed” (author’s term). In other words, details of the bedroom episodes did not add value to the storyline so Cochran used his computer to cut out those scenes. “I think I was still writing with the same mindset I used for the key character in my ‘Love, Lies and Liaisons’ trilogy about a university president who was a sex addict.”
In a recent interview, the author made a point of thanking Oscar Westerfield, Supervisory Special Agent (retired), FBI Detroit, 1973-80 and Scott Burnstein, Author “Motor City Mafia” and “Detroit True Crime Chronicles.” for their part in the sharing historical facts used in the book.
