When asked to comment, Strohl said, “Many U.S. citizens and U.S. Green Card holders or Lawful Permanent Residents living and working outside the U.S. that want to avoid paying double taxes and that would like to become or stay tax compliant, maybe unsure where to find the right help.”
“In my experience there are three essential factors to look for when choosing the right tax firm if you’ve lived or are still living outside the U.S.” Strohl added.
1. Pursue a Specialist
As an expat, one of the most important things is finding a U.S. tax expert who can navigate the U.S. tax landscape from an international perspective.
“Because the international tax system with regards to U.S. individual income taxes is so extremely complex and highly technical, you should find a Certified Public Accounting (C.P.A.) firm that focuses purely on U.S. international individual income taxes, or expat taxes,” he said.
With more than 20 years of experience in providing tax services to expats, and as a recognized and world renowned leader in the area Strohl added that a specialized C.P.A should also be able to provide a quick timely responses and quick turnaround.
“If you’re looking to come back into the U.S. tax compliance fold, then chances are you’ll have a lot of questions. A professional tax expert should be able to respond quickly and timely, perhaps within 20 minutes or less to a client or potential client communications. If not this may be a warning sign and an indicator that the persons you’re dealing with may not have the answers immediately to at hand,” he said.
2. Avoid Unlicensed Firms
Another key thing to keep in mind, according to Strohl, is to steer clear of companies that seem like they are “too good to be true.”
“What a lot of people don’t realize is that the tax preparation industry in the U.S. is unregulated, so it’s not uncommon to find unlicensed tax preparers that make promises they can’t live up to. Anyone can prepare a U.S. tax return, but not many understand how to do that if you’re living or have been living and working outside of the US,” he commented.
One of the telltale signs of this type of situation is when you have if you’ve got an outstanding tax liability, according to Strohl, is that companies like this will offer to settle tax resolutions for pennies on the dollar for an initial low upfront fee. He added that clients who often get charged very little upfront can end up spending thousands more than what they owe after a long drawn out process of interaction with the IRS.
“The best way to avoid this is to make sure you’re that the person you are dealing with is a Certified Public Accountant, or CPA,” he said.
3. Look for Signs Of Authority
Another way to decide if you’ve found the right C.P.A. firm involved in U.S. international individual tax compliance and consulting, is to learn how much they contribute to the profession as an authoritative source. That could mean publishing, teaching, or educating C.P.A’s., Attorneys and the general public at large.
For example, one of the ways this can be done, according to Strohl, is by seeing what educational and informative articles they’ve published, and for which media. Additionally Strohl adds inquire how involved they are teaching others in their area of expertise.
“You’ll want to choose a U.S. international individual income tax compliance and consulting firm that is located in the U.S. only and that constantly informs the industry. This way you can be rest assured that the C.P.A. firm is up-to-date and knows how to use the tax system to minimize your tax liability and make sure that you are in full U.S. tax compliance,” Strohl said.
Marc J Strohl, CPA of Protax Consulting Services has written articles published by Thomson Reuters in their Practical International Tax Strategies, Journal of International Taxation and Practical Tax Strategies publications and that are referenced and used by other U.S. tax C.P.A. and Attorney consultancy firms both in and outside the U.S. – such as the Big Four – to educate their clients and other tax experts in terms of international tax situations.
In addition Strohl conducts webinars and live presentations for CCH Wolters Kluwer, Strafford Publications, the Clear Law Institute and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), Furthered Education and Lawline.
