Minneapolis, Minnesota- Amana, one of Minnesota’s leading sources of advanced HVAC equipment, is promoting better public understanding of dry air. By teaching Minnesotans how dry air affects their health and their property, the company hopes to convince them to invest in the equipment for full home humidification.
Humidity Highlights
Paying attention to humidity is important everywhere, but it is especially critical in Minnesota. During the winter, humidity levels can drop as low as 10 percent. Moreover, because of the state’s famously low temperatures, most Minnesotans have their home heating systems running constantly during this season. Given that heaters suck the moisture out of the air, this further exacerbates the dryness problem.
As part of a broader effort to improve Minnesotans’ understanding of heating, cooling, and ventilation, iHeartAmana.com has been running an online quiz. Entitled “How Dry Am I?” this quiz asked consumers to identify any experiences they had that are associated with regular exposure to dry air. The results demonstrate just how serious a problem low humidity is in Minnesota, with:
83 percent of people who took the quiz reported that they have dry skin
74 percent of respondents said they have dry nasal passages
73 percent reported a throat tickle; 58 percent said it was a consistent tickle
70 percent claim they’ve experienced static shocks
64 percent say they’ve had a dry, scratchy throat
63 percent claim they have dry, itchy eyes
53 percent have observed fly-away hair
53 percent suffer from fine lines and wrinkles
52 percent have trouble closing their doors
46 percent say their wood furniture has been drying out
45 percent observe that their hardwood floors have lost their luster
45 percent suffer from brittle nails
42 percent feel they are aging prematurely
“Amana seeks to go beyond merely lecturing people on the impact of dry air. In getting consumers to list the negative effects they’ve personally experienced, the company hopes to make these problems less abstract. Those who took the quiz will now have a more visceral sense of how dry air is affecting them, their families, and their property, making them more likely to do something about it,” said Pamela McManus, iHeartAmana Spokesperson.
Practical Prizes
Besides promoting better understanding of dry air and other air quality factors, Amana seeks to increase access to the HVAC equipment necessary for a healthy, comfortable household. Those who took this quiz were automatically entered for a chance to win a free whole house humidifier. Not only did this give people an incentive to take the quiz, but it helped them identify a practical step they could take to improve household humidity. Tammy C ultimately won the humidifier. Amana hopes that she will let others know how it helped her health and home, thereby convincing people all over Minnesota that they should invest in better HVAC equipment.
iHeartAmana.com plans to offer additional prizes in similar events every month, so that current and potential customers can more easily improve their air quality throughout the year. Twin City residents are invited to visit the website next month, when the topic will be “How To Beat High Energy Bills.”
