WebVine Confirm Smart Companies Are Riding The Bot Wave

Sydney based WebVine is a technology consultancy helping clients all around the globe with digital transformation projects. In a recent communique, they confirmed their observation that smart companies are riding the bot wave.

While the technology to simulate conversation with a computer isn’t new, bots and their myriad uses are increasingly moving beyond the IT department and into business strategy meetings. Tech giants and challengers alike are refining bot technology to better serve both internal and external users.

Business Insider expects over 80% of businesses to have some sort of chatbot automation implemented by 2020, and with increased investment from the big players like IBM, Facebook, Google and Microsoft, artificial intelligence has made significant advances in the last few years, fueling the rise of the bot. The potential cost savings are significant, with one report from Juniper Research estimating chatbots could save businesses over US$8 billion per annum by 2022, up from $20 million in 2017.

Sydney technology consultancy WebVine saw the opportunity to leverage this technology within their digital workplace Injio, building a Knowledge Base bot using the Microsoft Bot Framework to help people find the information they need to do their jobs.

“The idea behind all of our products is to reduce the time people spend on repetitive, low-value work so they can concentrate on creative solutions and new ideas. A bot fits naturally into this concept” says Managing Director Marcus Dervin.

The Injio intranet bot will help overcome some of the challenges users experience when searching for content within SharePoint. People often expect SharePoint search to work like a search engine but high levels of content redundancy and poor metadata population can mean SharePoint has to wade through a lot of material to try and deliver the content users are looking for.

To search their company’s resources using InjioBot, the user will start a conversation simply by saying ‘Hello Injio’ and typing in a query. The bot will then take the user’s question expressed in natural language and generate accurate SharePoint queries to produce more relevant results.

Says Umar Riaz, Senior SharePoint Consultant at WebVine, “Even with strong governance in place, it can be challenging for our clients to manage content lifecycles and provide a great search experience for users, especially those with less technical backgrounds. This bot will bridge the gap between user expectations and search functionality.”

While many chatbots have a long way to go before they can truly pass the Turing test, companies need to get serious about how they plan to use automation tools or risk being left behind. If your people are still spending their time on manual processes, responding to common customer service queries, checking set-ups for a new employee or managing back and forth to book a meeting, this could be costing you greater contribution and job satisfaction.
