Crystallize Consulting Advise Discernment In Selection Of Executive Coaches
Crystallize Consulting are a leading Australian executive & leadership coaching firm and advise greater discernment when selecting anexecutive coach.
Sydney , Australia – April 26, 2018 /PressCable/ —
Executive and Leadership coaches have become a permanent fixture of many organisations in the public and private sector in Australia. There has been an incredible increase in the number of individuals from an incredibly diverse range of backgrounds who position themselves as an executive coach, leadership coach or organisational coach in 2018. With this expansion in industry participants, there is a perception that Executive Coaching is a ‘profession’.
According to the Professional Standards Council of Australia, traditionally, a “professional” is someone who derived their income from their expertise, as opposed to an amateur. Further, a profession is a disciplined group of individuals who adhere to ethical standards. This group positions itself as possessing special knowledge and skills in a widely recognised body of learning derived from research, education and training at a high level, and is recognised by the public as such.
Indeed, many executive coaches meet these broad criteria and at a superficial level the coaching industry appears to be a profession. However, Mr Tim Hicks, Founder and Managing Director of Crystallize Consulting said, “Despite the rapid growth of the coaching industry, it remains unregulated and is still not considered a true profession. As such, there’s no barriers to entry to the coaching “profession” and anyone from any background with or without formal training can hang out one’s shingle and promote themselves as a coach. For this reason, we advise greater discernment and attention to consideration of key criteria and when selecting anexecutive coach”.
Crystallize Consulting’s checklist, along with key questions for purchasers of coaching in organizations to consider, is as follows:
1/ Check what evidence-based coaching qualifications the potential coach has. Understand if it is grounded in the scientific evidence base or simply based on life experience.
2/ Understand if your proposed coach receives one-to-one, peer or group supervision. Hours invested in coaching doesn’t correlate alone with coaching effectiveness, however, the potency of coaching is enhanced if the hours are coupled with reflective practice.
3/ Coal face experience in the industry sector means there’s a familiar. The coaching approaches need to be underpinned by more than life experience, work experience and commercial frameworks.
4/ It’s important that the coach demonstrates an understanding of the organisational context.
5/ Understand what instruments the coach accredited in. Leadership surveys hold the potential to speed up the coaching.
6/ Be comfortable with the previous business roles they have performed. (E.g. CEO, Board, Executive, managerial, sales, business analyst, engineer, doctor etc.)
7/ It’s important that the coach demonstrates commercial acumen in their dealings with you.
8/ Confirm what memberships to professional bodies they have and if they abide by a code of ethics, it important to understand which code.
9/ Finally, you need to feel happy to be coached by this person.
Crystallize Consulting note that purchasers of coaching in organisations, particularly in large publicly listed companies demonstrate good judgement with respect to coach assessment and selection. They avoid engaging coaches that lack the appropriate skills, experience and attributes. However, there remains an opportunity for more discernment.
