Surwon Technology Hails Graphene Breakthrough

Hong Kong-based advanced materials innovator, Surwon Technology is hailing a recent experiment by a European-based group of physicists in which they successfully used graphene to compress light to a thickness of just one atom as “game-changing”.

The breakthrough by researchers at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Spain reportedly paves the way for the construction of miniscule sensors, detectors and switches, something that is beyond the capabilities of the conventional materials in use today by chip and semi-conductor manufacturers.

Surwon Technology believes the development could one day lead to the construction of nano-sized machines capable of operating at the cellular level and that such development holds enormous implications for medical treatments.

“We had always believed that reducing light to the thickness of one atom to be impossible since, previously, all attempts to do so using metal would always culminate in a loss of energy. That graphene made the feat possible is further testament to the fact that we are still only scratching the surface of what this remarkable material is capable of,” enthused Surwon Technology’s Chief Technology Officer.

The ICFO researchers admitted that the discovery was made entirely by accident during an attempt to find new ways of exciting graphene “plasmons”. While doing so, they noticed that the confinement was better than anything they’d managed to achieve before while energy losses were minimal.

“We will be keeping a close eye on their development with a view to guiding some of our own research into nano-technology,” concluded Surwon Technology’s CTO.
