Program Featuring All Women Composers To Include Premiere of “Sheltering Voices” for Soprano, Women’s Chorus, and Orchestra
Boston, MA, April 15th 2017 — Boston’s Eureka Ensemble, led by Artistic Director Kristo Kondakci, will present a concert on May 12th at 8:00 pm at the Church of the Covenant in Boston featuring violist Wenhong Luo, soprano Angel Azzara, and singers from Boston homeless shelters in a program of music by Augusta Read Thomas, Rebecca Clarke, Amy Marcy Cheney Beach, and Stephanie Ann Boyd.
Eureka Ensemble uses music as a platform for social action and community engagement and is working with Cambridge Women’s Center, the Pine St. Inn, and Rosie’s Place to assemble a female choir made up of both homeless women and others. The choir will perform a newly commissioned work, “Sheltering Voices”, by Eureka Ensemble Composer-in-Residence Stephanie Ann Boyd, with text by poet and women’s rights activist Jessica Lynn Suchon. Other works on the program include “Prayer and Celebration” by Augusta Read Thomas, Ruth Lomon’s arrangement of Rebecca Clarke’s viola sonata, and “Symphony in E Minor” by Amy Marcy Cheney Beach.
Eureka’s core principle is that a musical ensemble represents an ideal model for teamwork and community – a platform where different groups of people work together in pursuit of one common goal. Their musicians strive for everyone to share in the ‘eureka!’ moment that a great work of art can inspire. Eureka works with artistically under-served communities through an extensive community engagement program, involving at-risk youth, people living with special needs, and the economically less-fortunate. “Building this project has been absolutely thrilling,” said Kristo Kondakci, Eureka’s Artistic Director. “We’re bringing together so many different parts of the community through music, and we can’t wait to present this compelling tribute to the power of women’s voices for the people of Boston.”
