Weeks ago, Scott Brooks Jr announced his new book called “Soul Call Series, A Soul Call from Prison: How Yoga and Taoism Cured my Crises with Cocaine and Christianity”. This unique story will definitely inspire and touch everyone who comes across it. The book represents a spiritual manual and memoir of a man who found a way to cope with his crisis and addictions in prison.
What inspired him to write this magnificent piece is the realization of everything he’d lost. How life has changed for him and how everything turned upside down. He used to relive the day he got handcuffed over and over again. The questions that were constantly coming to his mind were about what will happen to him inside, what will happen to his life and future and will he be able to have a normal life one day?
But instead of drowning in depression he decided to take the advice of a fellow prisoner and practice some techniques that will eventually save him spiritually. It took him years but he succeeded. Where most people use medicine or therapists, he used only his mind, his commitment and persistence.
He explains how one spiritual practice can prove that everything people experience is based on their internal decision. The practice of Rasa Sadhana has changed his life. His commitment to it was a complete revelation. The practice is about the origin of the emotions. Where they come from in the first place. It helps people control their emotions and start looking at people objectively. With consistent effort, the practice will can help people feel less angry in difficult situations and cope with the problems more easily and effectively.
What Scott tries to share with everyone is his journey about how he started practicing mindfulness in his cell. While the other prisoners were jogging and trying to forget the real life complexity, he decided to go deeper and find a way to deal with the trouble and find a clarity in the moment of awareness. Meditation actually cleared his mind and inspired him to write this very book.
Six years into prison sand a few months into an unexpected journey, this man experienced a true epiphany. Something happened, not during his daily meditation period, but instead in a series of insights which helped him see how it was possible to integrate the benefits from mindfulness into everyday life. Read this touching confession here.
Scott Brooks has been in prison for the last two decades and has become an incarcerated student of the Syda Yoga Foundation and he spent most of his time teaching other inmates how to practice mindfulness in the last decade. This book is the first in the Soul Call Series dedicated to helping people find their peace and awareness.
