One of the biggest concerns that Lexington Kentucky homeowners face is bats in the attic. Big brown bats and little browns bats, 2 common nuisance bat species, have a maternity season like other Kentucky bat species. This means that they have not be harmed or removed until the baby bats are large enough to safely leave on their own. Luckily the professionals at Wildlife Removal Pros in Lexington KY have professionals that can assist with these issues. Wildlife Removal Pros Website – http://kywildliferemovalpros.com/

The bat removal process is very simple yet takes experience to do it properly.

Step 1: Perform a full inspection of the building. This is to determine exactly how the bats are getting in and out.

Step 2: Perform an attic inspection, and identify the species of bat. This is important because different bats have different birthing and hibernating seasons.

Step 3: Exclude the bats, do not try to trap bats. Bat trapping is illegal, bat exclusion is much more effective, which is the process of letting them fly out, but not back in, to the building.

Step 4: Seal up the house to keep bats out permanently. In fact, much of this is done prior to the exclusion – just be sure not to seal up the primary exit points while any bats are inside!

Step 5: Clean the attic or walls, or space where the bats lived and defecated. Bat guano can be very toxic.

For bat exclusion there are a few main devices:

1/4 inch poly netting – A good all-purpose bat net with a small enough grade to prevent the bats from getting stuck in the mesh or strangled. It must be set correctly though, to allow the bats to fly out but not fly back in.

Window Screen – Regular window screen at home depot, the softest you can find, makes a great exclusion tool. As with the netting, a combination of staple gun or duct tape is a good way to secure it to the house.

Funnels – Funnels made of various materials, from clear plastic to 1/4 inch steel screening, work very well in some scenarios. Even a small water bottle, cut open at both ends, can work! I don’t use funnels if there are a lot of bats, because of the bottleneck. Funnels are best used in areas with horizontal or tricky architecture, when the bats are leaving out of a small hole.

Bat Cones – These are special funnels with a tapered body and attachment wings that you can purchase online.

Dangers of Bat Guano:

Ask nearly anyone, and you’ll hear that bats (although beneficial in insect control) can be dangerous because they carry rabies. But a lesser known danger, and one that is not as easy to avoid, is histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis is a disease you can get from exposure to bat guano (bat droppings).

What is Histoplasmosis?

It is an infectious disease caught by inhaling the spores of the histoplasma capsulatum fungus. While it is not contagious between two people, the disease can affect a wide variety of the population who may not even be aware they are at risk.

Should people be concerned about getting histoplasmosis?

Anyone can get histoplasmosis. There are, however, certain people whose occupations make the risk of exposure greater than others. Included in that group are chimney cleaners, construction workers, gardeners, HVAC installers or repair people, roofers, and, of course spelunkers (cave explorers). In reality, however, anyone who comes across the fungus can get histoplasmosis.

If you have bats in your attic do not try to remove them without protective equipment. Bats can carry rabies and other diseases.
