Garland Texas Roofing Company – Professional Roofing Contractors Warn Homeowners about Storm Chasers
Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex roofers discuss the reasons you should beware of storm chasers when it comes to your roofing needs
DALLAS, TX / ACCESSWIRE / May 30, 2018 / Dallas-Fort Worth roofing contractor, R2 Roof Guys, wants homeowners to be aware of storm chasers as the summer months and severe weather lurk around the corner. Heavy rainfall, wind, and hail all have the potential to damage your roof, and storm chasers know it. Don’t be surprised if you have a knock at your door after the next storm, and you find a salesman there offering you a low, low price for roof repairs.
What is a Storm Chaser?
Storm chasers, as it relates to roofing, are usually fly-by-night contractors who follow storms around the country offering to help homeowners with roof repair or replacement. Many of these storm chasers are unqualified roofers who do substandard work and overcharge insurance companies. Sometimes they will prey on elderly or people with handicaps who have no way of inspecting their roofs for themselves.
One common scam that storm chasers will attempt is going door to door, telling homeowners that they just finished a job in the neighborhood that left them with a surplus of roofing supplies. This, along with the storm damage your roof may have sustained has the makings of a win-win situation.
Unfortunately, many times, it is not a winning situation for the homeowner. The storm chasing contractor won’t show a business license or leave contact information or even offer references. He will typically ask for money upfront and may not even complete the work on your roof, moving on to the next victim before you even realize it.
How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of a Storm Chaser
Keep the following red flags in mind so you don’t become a victim of a storm chaser:
Don’t be pressured by a “limited-time offer” to hire the roofing company, especially following a damaging storm in the area.
Related to the point above, be leery of roofers from out of state. Storm chasers look for opportunities and conditions where they can prey upon people who may be distracted and distressed by storm damage.
Don’t pay for a large part (or all) of the work in advance. Legitimate contractors usually don’t request money upfront.
Always check the roofer’s references and find out if their insurance and licenses are current. If asked, a legitimate roofing company should provide proof of roofing credentials, workers’ compensation and general liability insurance, and written manufacturer and labor warranties.
Visit the Better Business Bureau’s website to see if anyone has filed a complaint against the roofer.
Make sure you get a written contract with all the work details and the agreed-upon price.
To confirm the company does in fact exist, make sure you get contact information, and then follow-up with them at a later time.
Don’t feel rushed into signing any contract or having the work done. Do your homework before agreeing to anything.
