Sunshine Coast, QLD – Anxiety House SC, a Caloundra-based private practice in psychology, is providing treatment for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders to adults, teens, and young children.

AHSC directors and clinical psychologists, Dr Emily O’Leary and Amber Rattray, recognised how expansive the field of mental health was and decided to focus on treating these disorders. The professional partners established the practice for clients of all age groups in the Sunshine Coast area.

AHSC recommends treating high-level stress enablers among adults with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Metacognitive Therapy (MCT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Through CBT, the client’s thoughts will be examined to identify which styles of thinking need improvement, encouraging healthier thinking patterns. The process involves an active collaboration between the clinician and client to address the unhealthy behaviours, and find a way to manage and apply more productive activities in dealing with stressors.

MCT focuses on controlling how one’s thinking is interpreted. Clients who suffer from excessive worry will discover better means of directing their attention, relating to negative thinking, and altering metacognitive thinking that causes detrimental thought patterns.

ACT is a behavioural therapy that centres on developing mindfulness skills to handle overwhelming situations. The patient is taught how to recognise and accept these experiences as a part of life, and encourage them to live with a more positive and meaningful outlook on life.

Anxiety House SC also endorses CBT to treat teens and children with OCD, selective mutism, and various forms of anxiety, including generalised anxiety, separation anxiety, and social anxiety. Parents need to be involved in their child/teen’s therapy, with the level of their involvement depending on the child/teen’s diagnosis and age.

With CBT, the patient and parent are taught exercises – like breathing, identifying unhealthy thoughts, and problem-solving – that can help control anxiety, motivating them to continue practising after anxiety therapy sessions. Constant implementation of these activities helps them pluck up the courage to overcome their fears and worries.

Apart from therapy, AHSC is giving parents the option to enrol their children in Macquarie University’s Cool Kids program. According to research, children who entered in the program showed remarkable development in school performance and extra-curricular activities. Issues with their shyness, confidence, self-esteem, phobias, and family relationships were significantly reduced as well.

Cool Kids offers three different types of programs according to the child’s age: Cool Little Kids program (three to six years old), Cool Kids program (seven to twelve years old), and the Chilled program (thirteen to seventeen years old).
